The van is ideal for a family of 3 or 4. The Bear Bus is a high top, long wheel base, dual rear axle Ford Transit van. Our main necessity was having safe and legal seating for our children, a feature offered by the Bear Bus in the form of a chassis mounted bench seat, which fits either adult passengers or up to two children’s car seats. We bought this van with the cabinetry fitted, we then added a number of features ourselves. We fitted a simple solar system and reconfigured the electrics. We added a tow hitch, made a fold down bed for our son with custom mattress, purchased a 12v chest fridge, fitted a fold out movable table, installed a working sink and water pump, and fixed a load of storage solutions to make it all into a van that is useable, sunny, photogenic and a great place to be on your next adventure.
The driving is smooth with the 3.5 liters Eco-boost. Petrol (gas) engine. 20 mpg average consumption. The ground clearance on The Bus is good, although the long distance behind the rear wheels and the back of the bus (especially with a bike rack) requires some care. We have found it to be fine on well graded dirt roads. The front seats are after-market swivel seats. This creates more space for lounging and living in the cabin when stationary. Lighting in the bus is provided by LED lights mounted in the ceiling. Air conditioning and heating is available only in the cabin while driving.
Although The Bus has automatic transmission, there is a manual function for use when driving down steep grades or in icy or wet conditions. For reversing there is a rear view camera. The bus has central locking, there are two keys for the bus. Unfortunately we could not activate the lock number pad on the door.
We equipped the cabin windows with cellular, insulating and black out blinds. They make a huge difference in temperature and keep The Bus extremely dark if required. The door windows and windshield have home-made insulation panels. We found that the numerous windows make it beautiful to sit in and enjoy the views, take photos and also keep an eye on little ones running around outside.
The sink works with a pump which can be switched on in the control panel above the large door. The gray water jug and fresh water jug is easily accessed under the sink.
There is a lot of storage for clothing and equipment. The stall contains the fridge and storage space for shoes and clothes.
This is a 1000W Jackery battery that stores the energy from 200W of solar panels. It provides both AC and DC outlets and has shown no signs of running down on our sunny trips in the American West. It powers the fridge and lights. We added extra USB ports to charge your devices. On rainy days it is possible to connect the Jackery Box to the Bus’ 12 V cigarette outlet while you are driving to recharge it.
The spare tire is found at the back, under the vehicle.
The double bed, almost a queen, is fitted along the rear of the bus. The fold down bed has a custom hypoallergenic waterproof mattress, a quick release side netting and is ideal for a child up 4 years old. The baby bed mattress is 23 x46 inches
We are selling the van with all the equipment that you would need to drive it away on your first adventure, including a double gas stove, overhead storage, plates, bowls, silver wear, and bedding.
You only need a regular license to drive it.
