I’m a solo senior female traveler, and this van has been very reliable and easy to drive and park. I chose the Ford Transit because it’s much easier to find a repair shop and get standard parts.
My dog and I lived on the road in the van for a year while I built it out with the help of skilled friends in various locations. It was very functional for me, but a few of the finishing touches/tweaks haven’t been completed. I’m including lots of materials and odds and ends – headliner material for covering the columns, latches, Velcro, magnets, etc.
Currently the van sleeps one person in an east/west configuration, but it can be extended to about full size with a slide-out system. The length of the bed is about 70″, but the sides of the van are soft at the head/foot of the bed (insulation and curtains), and someone 6′ tall has slept comfortably.
The refrigerator has been perfect for me. I use the smaller compartment as a freezer (or a colder section) and the larger side as a fridge. It’s plugged into both electrical systems (AC and DC), and it runs on 12v unless I’m using shore power (or switch the control box to 110v). I don’t cook much on the road, but there’s a toaster/convection oven and I bring along my Instant Pot and an electric kettle.
The Cuddy composting toilet slides under the counter, but could also go under the bed.
All the components can easily be removed or modified. The bench seat is bolted to the floor (the seat belts were professionally installed). The lower cabinets are also bolted to the floor. If you want to fit a shower in, you could remove the bench seat. The sink is also situated so that the faucet can spray outside the door. The fresh-water tank is 21 gallons, and the grey water is a 5-gallon container below the sink that’s easy to remove and dump in any gutter. I kept a small foldable bike in the garage.
I’m the second owner of the van. The original owner backed into a post and dented the rear door, which hasn’t affected the function at all. It has been regularly and thoroughly maintained since.
